May 10 marks the celebration of Military Spouse Appreciation Day, a time to honor and recognize the immense contributions made by military spouses in supporting our nation’s service members.

Throughout Military Appreciation Month, we pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of our military personnel and their families. It’s a chance to show gratitude for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding our country and way of life.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day is an occasion to acknowledge the critical role played by military spouses in supporting their partners’ service, often making significant sacrifices themselves. They are the backbone of military families, providing unwavering love and support in the face of frequent relocations, deployments, and other challenges.

As we celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we also remember the sacrifices made by the families of fallen service members. We honor their resilience and courage, and we pledge to always keep their loved ones’ memory alive.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day reminds us of the vital importance of supporting our service members and their families. Let us take this opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation to the military spouses who selflessly serve alongside their partners.

On March 8, #InternationalWomensDay, and throughout the month of March, Americans will celebrate the many achievements of women throughout history in art, athletics, business, government, philanthropy, humanities, science, and education.  Women have contributed a lot to society, and we have made great strides in reducing the gender equity gap. However, we still have some barriers to overcome to ensure equal economic opportunities, educational equity, women’s health, and an end to gender-based violence.

In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, America’s Charities is celebrating the following agents of change who we are proud to call our members:

  • ACLU – Women have made great strides in the fight for equality, but gender bias continues to create huge barriers for many—especially immigrants, women of color, women with low incomes, and victims of domestic violence. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, the ACLU Women’s Rights Project pushes for change and systemic reform in institutions that perpetuate discrimination against women, focusing its work in the areas of employment, violence against women, and education.
  • WOMEN’S WAY – WOMEN’S WAY has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of women and their families through its . By seeding, supporting, and leading an array of efforts in the Greater Philadelphia region, they are working toward ensuring affordable health care access and protecting reproductive rights; empowering leadership; implementing systems change in responding and preventing domestic violence; and achieving equal opportunity and economic security for women and girls everywhere.
  • Fòs Feminista – Aspires to co-create a feminist future where all women, girls, and gender-diverse people have the support, information, and services they need to make their own choices about their bodies, their sexuality, and their lives.
  • NARAL – NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation fights to protect and expand these rights at every level of government—whether that means putting pressure on lawmakers and corporations, educating the public about current events, or changing the conversation ahead of monumental Supreme Court decisions.

Throughout the month of March, we encourage you to:

  • Join us in celebrating Women’s History Month! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook as we share how our members’ specific programs empower women’s contributions to the advancement of communities around us.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March is designated as National Reading Month – a month to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day.

Reading is fun and has many benefits, regardless of your age. It’s a key component of education and professional development. It also has immediate and long-lasting health benefits such as increased cognitive function, memory, vocabulary, empathy and decreased levels of stress.

In honor of #NationalReadingMonth, America’s Charities is celebrating the following agents of change who we are proud to call our members:

Arlington Housing Corporation (AHC Inc.) – As a not-for-profit developer of affordable housing communities for low-income families and individuals in the mid-Atlantic region, AHC has learned that it takes more than bricks and mortar to build successful futures. Through its award-winning Resident Services program, AHC is creating stability and opportunity through social services and year-round educational programs including After-School literacy activities, Teen Tutoring, College & Career prep, and a Summer Camp to prevent learning loss.

Reading Is Fundamental – Reading Is Fundamental is committed to a literate America by inspiring a passion for reading among all children, provided quality content to create impact, and engaging communities in the solution to give every child the fundamental building blocks for success. Their model for impact is grounded in creating a culture of literacy for the children we serve – providing choice and access to books, as well as engagement opportunities for these children and the educators, parents, and caregivers that nurture and support them. Reading Is Fundamental provides free books for children nationwide and engages children, parents, and communities in reading and motivational activities to encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Throughout the month of March, we encourage you to:

  • Join us in celebrating National Reading Month! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook as we share how our members’ specific programs provide access to books and encourage reading.

February marks the observance of American Heart Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and encourage actions to prevent heart disease. In the spirit of fostering well-being, let’s explore the significance of this month and how organizations can make a positive impact through initiatives like Employee Assistance Funds (EAFs).

As we transition into this health-focused month, it’s essential to acknowledge the interconnectedness of personal and financial well-being. While the holiday season brings joy, it can also leave individuals facing unexpected financial challenges. American Heart Month prompts us to reflect not only on physical health but also on the financial stressors that may linger from the previous year.

Creating a Tangible Impact: Implementing an Employee Assistance Fund

An impactful approach for employers to contribute to the well-being of their team members during American Heart Month is by establishing an Employee Assistance Fund (EAF). Much like the concept highlighted earlier, an EAF serves as a tangible expression of kindness and support within the workplace, addressing unique financial stressors that individuals may encounter.

The EAF provides practical assistance to employees grappling with financial challenges, ensuring they can navigate life’s uncertainties without overwhelming stress. Whether it’s unexpected medical expenses related to heart health or unforeseen financial burdens, the EAF becomes a safety net, fostering an environment where employees feel valued and supported.

The Real Difference an Employee Assistance Fund Makes

An Employee Assistance Fund can significantly impact the lives of employees who may be struggling to meet essential needs, especially those related to heart health. From managing medical costs to addressing financial strains, this initiative sends a powerful message to employees: “We recognize your well-being is vital, and we’re here to support you.”

As we focus on American Heart Month, consider taking the first step toward creating an Employee Assistance Fund in your organization. This initiative goes beyond being a financial gesture; it’s a commitment to the holistic health of your team, a tangible expression of care, and a reminder that support plays a crucial role in the workplace. Let the spirit of American Heart Month guide our actions, creating workplaces that prioritize heart health, understanding, and shared warmth throughout the year.

Across the nation, children are well on their way with the new school year – learning, exploring, and building friendships.  It’s a welcome return to normalcy after schools and families have navigated (and continue to navigate) the many challenges and long-term effects of the pandemic. And while we know we’ve come a long way, we have to recognize a difficult reality: there is a literacy crisis in America that has been deeply exacerbated by the pandemic. Recent results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the nation’s report card, indicate reading scores are at a 30-year low.

This data confirms our worst fears about the impact of the pandemic on our nation’s children and demonstrates the urgency to rally together and take action. For nearly six decades, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has been working tirelessly to provide books and reading resources to children, inspiring the joy of reading, and putting children on a path to reading proficiency. We work to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, discover, and achieve their full potential.

During this season of gratitude, we are more thankful than ever to our many supporters and partners who have enabled our work to support and empower educators, families, and children. And now is the time to come together for our nation’s young readers and join with RIF to inspire the joy of reading to build a nation of lifelong readers.

Here is how you can help:

  • Donate to RIF.  You can give directly through RIF’s site or designate RIF as your charity of choice for the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) workplace giving program.  Federal employees and retirees can support RIF through the CFC using CFC # 10948.
  • Stay informed about the nation’s literacy crisis and the research-backed programs and content RIF provides as part of the solution.
  • Fundraise for RIF (See “Start a Facebook fundraiser for RIF.”)

Together, we can create a nation of skilled readers and ensure that all children are on a path to read and succeed.

ABOUT RIF:

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) is committed to creating a nation of lifelong readers by inspiring the joy of reading among all children, putting them on the path to becoming skilled readers. We provide free, high-quality content to engage children, educators, families, and literacy advocates in the solution to the U.S. literacy crisis—so that every child has the fundamentals for success. As the nation’s leading children’s literacy nonprofit, RIF has provided nearly 430 million books and reading resources to over 160 million children since 1966, impacting generations of children. Explore our results and learn more about partnering with us at RIF.org.

Each November, hospice and palliative care programs reach out to raise awareness about the importance of high-quality hospice and palliative care. Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families. These programs combine the highest level of quality medical care with emotional and spiritual support that families need most when facing a serious illness or dealing with end of life issues.

In recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month November 1-30, 2023, America’s Charities is celebrating the following members who are raising awareness for high-quality hospice and palliative care.

One of the most cost-efficient ways you can support these nonprofits is to donate to them via payroll deduction through your employer’s workplace giving program (Don’t have a program? Click here to have your employer contact our team.)
